PCLinuxOS gave you the same message?
That's interesting, that would indicate a hardware problem.
The chances of two distros having the same error is slim.
Thanks again. There is a possibility that the ram could be bad, after all this is an old pc. It has 1 meg of ram in 4 slots of 256k each. I can run the memtest but I have never understood that gobledigook that pops up and I don't mind the wait time. I will run it tonight so that it will run until I wake up to go to work. Now if the ram is bad, can I run Jaunty at a lower level of ram if so, what is the minimum ram that it can run without a problem considering all the other dimms are ok. However, if it turns out that the slot is bad, can I run it with the other slots or should I just replace the board. Man, this is so crazy. But, you can't have an omelet without braking a few eggs? HUH?
Well, this time I am hoping to get something out of this. Thanks again and I want to make sure that I post my final results after this gets fixed or not!?!?
Any bad RAM must be removed from the machine or it will perform erratically.
The mem check test shouldn't take that long and it will be fairly obvious if there is a problem.
The way to find which stick is to remove all four, put one ack in and run the mem check test. If stick 1 passes then power down, remove, insert 2 and so on till you find the culprit.
Ubuntu and its various derivatives will run just as well with 768MB as with 1Gig.

Well, that did it. I ran the memtest and have determined what was wrong with my computer. IActually was able to run the memtest on the system with all the chips in place and then was able to decipher some of the data to determine what slot or chip was the problem. Man, I spent 2 days working on it and I finally got it. Thanks to your advice. I removed the 2 bad chips and now my computer is running on 512Mbs of ram with no problems, I reloaded a fresh copy of Ubuntu 9.04 and the Edubuntu addon as well as a few little extras to have like Alien Arena which I have enjoyed playing. It is running great and no additional problems have come up. Only thing now is where can I get some replacement chips from that are PC133 DIMMs, you read correctly. PC133 either at 512mb or 256mb each in order to bring that computer to a faster speed. My son will be happy when I give him his new old computer. I am going to continue to monitor the system just in case and will continue to keep you apprised of the situation if something else comes up. I appreciate all your help and look forward to getting my whole family into Linux. Thank you, and keep on Tuxin'.
