i am trying to switch from a Windows desktop to exclusively Linux (currently Gentoo). in Windows, I was using Dreamweaver MX for my web development needs, almost entirely because of one feature: its ability to directly access an FTP server for editing. upon saving the file (temporarily stored on disk), Dreamweaver would sync the file with the website, so there was no need for an upload process after modifications. in rapid development, which is pretty much all i do, this type of thing is a must.
i got Dreamweaver working in my previous install (Mandrake) using Wine, but it seemed sluggish and the FTP feature, the only reason I cared about it, had a broken dialog rendering it unusable.
what solution(s) should I use in Linux to accomplish the same thing? i need to be able to edit web documents (ColdFusion, PHP, ASP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, XML) and have them sync with an FTP server automatically. the syntax highlighting of Dreamweaver as well as the tag/function hinting was useful, but I could live without if i can acheive the FTP.
no one can help me here, huh? maybe i will modify my question a bit.
for all of you web developers out there that have to edit and then save files on a remote FTP server, what do you use for this in a Linux environment?
i just had to do some work tonight, and I used KBear with GVim. although it worked, it was awkward to have to leave GVim to upload with each change. also, KBear, on occaision, would just stop doing transfers. the transfers would get queued but nothing would happen. the connection to the server was fine though because as soon as i restarted KBear everything worked instantly. this pseudo-lockup happened twice to me in like an hour.
quanta might be what you are after. i haven't used it so i don't know if it has integrated FTP (think it might), but i know bluefish doesn't, and afaik those are the "big two." nothing in linux can really compete with dreamweaver yet, unfortunately. if it's any consolation, i just use a text editor and then gtfp everything over. it's not that bad for smaller jobs. if the file is already there and i need to edit it, i usually just ssh to the web server and use vim.
thanks for the tip; i will check out Quanta. and that idea about ssh/vim is great, except the box is a Windows box. :-) and if that wasn't bad enough, the website is written using ASP.
