Editing video_dvd.script

This is my video_dvd.script,

#!/bin/sh
#---------------------------------------------------------------
# Project : Mandrake Linux
# Module : user-scripts
# File : video_dvd.script
# Version : $Id: video_dvd.script,v 1.4 2004/03/10 14:45:38 flepied Exp $
# Author : Frederic Lepied
# Created On : Fri Jan 30 17:02:15 2004
# Purpose : launch a DVD player when a DVD is inserted
#---------------------------------------------------------------

. /usr/share/dynamic/functions.script

launch totem dvd:
launch vlc dvd:"$DEV"

echo "No application to play a video DVD"

# video_dvd.script ends here

Now how do I change this so it uses xine instead of totem? I am trying to do this in Mandrake 10.0 Official. I went to the kde start menu/system/configuration/hardware/cd properties and looked but I am not sure what to do their, if anything. If I have to I will just turn it off but I would like to do it automatically.

Maybe I'm dim, but if you're setting up automatic playback using this script, why don't you just change "totem" to "xine-ui", or "gxine" (I'm a GNOME user) or "kaffeine" (since you're a KDE user).

The problem is not so much in the file associations, insofar as Xine is perfectly well aware that it is capable of playing a DVD, and KDE is also aware that Xine can play a DVD. It's just that if you say "open this media file", without adding "with Xine" or "with Kaffeine", Totem will be chosen first.

But you're always able to say "open this media file with the program of my choice rather than the default", and since that's what your script seems to do, I would think that just changing the program that the script uses would be enough.

Am I being naive?

In any case, if you don't want to remove Totem, but just want to change the default application for media files, I would look for the MIME types configuration options.

A Google search for change MIME types KDE seems to produce several useful hits that might help you figure out how to do that. Such as this:
Quote:
9.6. How do I change MIME Types?

If you are using Konqueror, do this instead: first, open a Konqueror window and choose Edit->File Type. Find the type you want to change (e.g. text/english or image/gif), click the right mouse button, select General, and set the application preference order to whatever you want.
Hope this helps.
