Editing root files from different os (like knoppix)

Hi, currently im a interNoobiate (using Suse 9.1) so i know a thing or two but after installing vector linux over win98 and now wanting to install win98 over vector i looked around for how to boot the cdrom from grub so I can avoid 98 overwriting grub. So looked around found a howto which i couldnt get the cdrom to work with then found info on memtest & smart boot manager followed that booted win98 cdrom installed rebooed. = MBR being buggered

SO, what i beleive i need to do is reinstall grub (grub-install)so tried suse recovery and it was missing stage1/lib. Tried knoppix it couldnt write anything because only root was alowed and i dont see a way of accessing root protected files on the suse install.

Thx for reading and any help you can give .

Mount your suse partition somewhere (i.e. if SuSE's root partition is /dev/hda2 then mount that as /mnt/hda2) then use the chroot command:
chroot /mnt/hda2
that will treat /mnt/hda2 as / until you type exit, meaning you can access any of your suse system as if it was the main running system, so you can reinstall grub.

Thx, didnt fix the prob put me on the right track. Apparently suse doesnt like grub-install, "error= /usr/lib/stage1" (which is the proper error message knoppix gave me.) So i found some help at suse. From suse recovery i ran "grub --batch --device-map=/boot/grub/ </etc/grub.conf" that did the trick .
