Edit XF86 in text mode

Rather foolishly I made some changes to my XF86 file, rebooted, and now it wont start x. Just an error. I know which parts of the file I changed so I could change it back easily, I just done know how to open up an editable copy of this file in text mode.

I have tried 'vi' then filename but I just get a blank screen with a line of $(I think) signed down the left hand side. Almost as if the file does not contain any info.

Any ideas?

Thanks, James.

Vi should work fine - are you sure you specified the right file and path?
vi /etc/X11/XF86Config

Are you doing it as root?
What text editor are you using and are you saving it before you close it?

It might help if you actually tell us what the error is when you try to startx.

You will see this with (EE) next to them
