Eclipse on Fedora Core 2

Hi there, i am very new to linux, and I am having trouble getting any executable files to work for me. i have downloaded eclipse and jext but cant seem to get them to run. there is an executable file with both, but when i try to start them from the command line nothing happens. I know i am probably being really stupid and there is something ver obvious that i should be doing but i just cant figure it out any i am getting very frustrated. Any help you can give me would be hugely appreciated!!!!!

thanks!
