easy way to listen for mouse clicks in the shell?

hi all,

my debian box is being run headless and doesn't boot into the GUI.

i'd like to connect a remote to the server that executes a shell command when clicked. this remote doesn't have to be fancy - i was thinking even a corded usb mouse would do.

i have no idea though, how to go about listening for the mouse clicks in the shell.

does anyone have any suggestions on software i should look into?
or possibly suggest an easier setup than a mouse?

why i'm trying to do this: i've got a music player running on the server and i'd like to be able to control it without having to use a terminal.

much thanks!

You can write a c program using ncurses with GPM mouse support. Midnight Commander would be one program example.
