Question e-mail custom directories possible?

Hi--

Here is what I would like to do. Is it possible? What do I need to do to make it happen?

I get e-mail for some specific projects I am working on. Call them Project ABC and Project XYZ. I also get the usual run of general e-mail, not related to my various projects.

I would like to have all the e-mail for Project ABC to be in the /projects/ABC directory, and all for XYZ to be in the /projects/XYZ directory. General e-mail can reside wherever the e-mail client wants to put it.

Ideally, the e-mail that says in the subject line it is for ABC will automagically go directly to the ABC directory. If that is not possible, then I should be able to easily export it to that folder.

So, is this possible? How? What client would be best for this--Evolution, Thunderbird, something else?

Thanks!

This should be easy in any halfway decent mail client. For example, in KMail, you can create nested directories and create filter rules that will move a message to directory based on the subject, from address, or whatever. Messages that don't match any filter rule will just end up in the inbox.

Question

AdaHacker--

Well, it looks like that creates directories under for instance /home/usersname/.mozilla-thunderbird, or probably under kmail the same way, right?

What I want is for it to go under /projects/ABC instead.

So what makes sense? Do a soft link? Export each e-mail as I read it?

Or am I missing something?

Thanks, AdaHacker!

Any of the above should work. Using a symlink from ~/Mail/ABC to /projects/ABC would probably be the easiest way, as your mail client could still work with the messages.

Question

AdaHacker--

Thanks!

So are the mail files readable by programs other than the mail apps themselves? Such as by gedit or vi?

Thanks, AdaHacker!

Yes. If you're using maidir format for storage (which I'm assuming you are), then each message is a text file containing the full headers, body text and, possibly, base64 encoded attachments.

Wink

Thanks, AdaHacker--

That's what I wanted to hear!

I am guessing that the format you mention is standard on things like Evolution and Thunderbird....

Thanks!

Yes, maildir storage format is supported by most mail clients worth using. Usually, you're given the choice between maildir and mbox formats. The difference is basically that maildir is a mail directory (usually with a number of subdirectories) with one message per file, whereas mbox is a single file that stores all your mail.

AdaHacker--

Ahh! So maildir sounds much better.

Thanks!
