dysfunctional bootloader

Evening all,

My system runs XP pro and Mandrake 9.1, dualboot with the grub bootloader. I recently used Partition magic to create a new partition (logical) for windows data on my drive. It was doing its thing, so I left the machine to its devices. When I came back, its in a screen with a

grub>_

prompt. Apparently minimal BASH line editing is supported at this level. I suspect the grub loader can no longer see its boot paths. Is it possible to configure the bootloader from this prompt? I'm working up a remote river in Malaysia, and I have no rescuedisks of any description. A bit like up the creek without a paddle

Any bootloader advice would be appreciated

Ok, actually, the procedure for booting from there is quite simple:

grub> root (hd0,0) // Comment: replace 'hd0'(equals to hda) with the drive containing '/boot' is(hd0,hd1 etc...)
grub> kernel /kernel-xxxxxx root=hdb5  // Comment replace with your kernel's name like so /da-kernel
// Comment: the 'root=hdb5' part is optional, it's the location of '/'
grub>initrd /initrd-of-death // Comment: If you have one
grub>boot

Now, you have to find out your partitions' new numbers... hehe
