dynamic linking

Some months ago, a Linux user told me I could make applications run faster by turning off the dynamic linking. Is that true? If so, how would I do this? I would be interested, because my Linux applications don't run very fast at all. (Computer details: 600 MHz; 256 MB RAM; 10 GB HD.)
