dying processor after linux-wlan-ng-2.4.27-2-386... install

I am quite new to linux having installed debian sarge linux just yesterday. My first goal was of course to get my wireless up and working (I have a syntax wireless USB-400). After stuggling for hours on end I finally succeeded in installing the linux-wlan-ng-modules-2.4.27-2-386 (2.4.27-7+0.2.0+0.2.1pre21-1.1) package so that I could access the internet. (problem #1>)Trouble is that when I went to boot my computer today I found that I could not get a desktop environment to boot with the wireless stick plugged in (on kde it hung on starting services, on gnome it just didn't go). After taking the stick out and booting quite quickly into KDE I plugged it back in in an attempt to surf the net. (problem #2>)Now though, despite the fact that I can now access the net, it seems my processor has suffered a massive heart attack. The first time I hit the menu it takes some three minutes to actually pop up. However, after this initial pop it comes up in actual speed so I can tolerate that. The issue is that every other application takes the same three minutes to pop up (spinning hour glass in the taskbar for twenty seconds then the box vanishes and 2 min 40 secs later a window actually appears). No, I did not actually time this. The other applications do not act the same as the menu but rather take the same three minutes every time. Strangely web browsers seem to be an exception to this rule. Well that's all the information I know to provide so please ask if more is needed.

My eternal gratitude to anyone who can tell me how to get my processor back and how to boot without lying next to the computer to pull the stick out and then put it back in after initialization,
PhantmShado

PS. It took the GNOME control panel some twenty minutes to come up just now and man was I shocked as I forgot all about it

*edit: actually it seems after a period of about 15 minutes after boot plenty of the apps start fine, issue is that text editors and openoffice still do not, and of course that gnome control panel

well checked system guard and it appears that the processor just isn't doing anything rather than it being overloaded by doing too much. If someone could help me out here though it would still be greatly appreciated
