hi , i'm used to copy dvdvideo from k3b and it always worked.
But I got a dvd that was readable from dolphin (AUDIO and VIDEO folders) but when I tried to copy the dvd from k3b , it could not.
I then copied the audio and video file and created an iso and burned it.
My problem is that mplayer could play the original dvd but not my copy of the dvd either as the iso or on the dvd itself.
And I am using slackware 13.1. dvdcss is installed onmy machine

Where did you get the "dvdvideo"?

Assuming you don't break any notorious copyright laws to make Stephen Spielberg and James Cameron poorer or some material which lost it's copyright over time (this usually also means the copyrighter dies), I answer.

Nowadays it appears the CSS decryption works at hardware level by the CD/DVD drive (this is what I've seen). If you copied using a drive which supports CSS (and might be it's violation too), you should have no problems.

If the drive does not support CSS, the copy will fail on a CSS protected disk, even dd does not help, proving to be a low level hardware issue.

As of your copied disk, first copy the relevant video files from the DVD then try to play the same (usually the right files are ~ 1 GB long).

That's not enough, what you rented could itself be pirated. Please give more evidence/information. Thanks.

BTW, where do you live? I ask because what you want to do may not be illegal there, yet still be against LQ policy because we are located in the U.S.

my dvd drive is ok with encrypted dvdvideo's since it's not my first copy.
The dvd is original that I am sure of.

Also I'm in mauritius , there are some copyright laws in mauritius but its more active for local artists.

Where the problem lies does not seems to be obvious.

mplayer can read the dvd, so a dumpstream works but I find all the menu to dissapear {I don't know how make a dvd video from the ts files and I'm not interested for the moment to reconvert it}.

All I'm interested in is that if I can play my copy of the videodvd since the ts multiplexer is encrypted (as far as I can know). The audio and video part are playable by mplayer but the latter is decoding the video as mpeg1video instead of mpeg2video even if I am forcing it (with -vc and -vcm).

Or else I will just make a dumpstream of the video and audio and then copy the menu, the subs and other stuff and later on , when I have the time and an internet connection at my home (to download the nessessary progs such as dvdauthor, mplex and transcode to do the dvdvideo).

I'm not a newbie to Unix nor multimedia transcoding stuff so you can assume to advise me about complicated stuff and even if I should do some hardcore programming.

Note to confused readers, the original of the following is hidden pending the resolution of the LQ Rules issue.
I think that you do not understand how sensitive an issue copyright circumvention is in the U.S. right now. If you want some background, read the Wikipedia® article on Digital rights management (DRM).

Unless someone can post a legitimate -- that is, legal in the U.S. -- use for dvdcss, I will have to close this thread. My apologies if you don't understand, but that is how it has to be.

Well, that's the reason I started to ask about copyright issues. I wanted to know how much I was breaking any law and what I can do. It's been a while that I compiled dvdcss so I forgot where I placed the source code.
