I need a bit of help with dvdbackup. I used to run Linux as my desktop (good old RH 7.2), but I got forced into Windows when I went into K-12 education. I guess my skills have diminished. Now, I'm trying to convince my wife to divorce ourselves from M$ completely. Backing up a dvd is the last (and biggest, I might add) hurdle.
I have been around the block and checked out the various forum threads to discover the following:
1. rip to disk with dvdbackup
2. run DVDShrink (which is wonderful) under wine
3. use K3B to burn
I can't get step 1 to work. Here is the process I went through to get dvdbackup going:
1. compile and install libdvdread from source (I used all of the defaults)
2. compile and install dvdbackup using the gcc line in the INSTALL file:
The compile seems to go fine and then when I try to execute dvdbackup I get an error saying it can't find the libdvdread shared object file. I can't provide the complete error message (I'm not at my machine), but I will soon if needed. Is this a path problem or something wrong with the compilation stage? I would love to just get to the part where I can use DVDShrink's magic on the files, but I need dvdbackup to get there. Please help... Thanks!
I'm not sure what your issue is with dvdbackup - however, I know under WXP I've used DVDShrink to read straight from the DVD. Does wine support that? If so, it would cut out a step, and since DVDShrink has the CSS code in it, it can strip that along with Macrovision and region settings.
I'm new to all this too - I'm just thrilled to hear that DVDShrink will work under Linux!
Thanks for the thoughts, but DVDShrink under wine cannot get directly to the DVD drive. There are some workarounds, however, which have worked with varying success.
I figured I'd put this up in case anyone has similar errors. libdvdread for some reasons puts all its libraries into /usr/loca/lib by default. Copying all of those files to /usr/lib solved my problem.
