DVD support for .VOB and MP3 with video applications concerning codecs in SUSE 11.0
Hello, From, Justin C.
I recently installed OpenSuse 11.0 I believe it is the open source edition, I can't play any store bought DVD's it gives me all kinds of errors concerning missing codecs etc. Where do I get working codecs from? Is it possible to play MPEGS? my HP camera was detected but I can't seem to play them within Linux either, is this common error? Please tell me what software I need to install to fix this major pain...?
Now I am new to linux, but one thing I use my pc for is watching DVDs from the local rental store after work, since I do not own a dvd player except for the one that is on my pc, I now can't watch them? Very upsetting, is there any Live edition of Linux that supports video playback or an edition I can install that would alleviate my photo editing and video viewing?
I was under the impression that Linux Suse 11 was better than windows XP, I went ahead with installation and checked the take entire drive box when installing it. Now I can't view any videos or music that I downloaded and paid for. Do I need to buy a new pc, or is there some work around to this problem? As I am a previous windows user, I do not know much about Linux, so please be descriptive and list sources links etc so that I can easily update my pc.
Below is my pc specs, AMD64 dual processor 4000+MHZ, 4 gigs ram, DVD-RW, and DVD player, 120Gig hard drive, and several external usb hard disks. I am not sure how to know if linux is the 64 bit edition or the 32 bit edition, however my pc boots up like in 8 seconds, instead of 5 minutes with windows XP, and very happy with performance increases, but I must also be able to do graphic editing? Is there any software I can download and use to help me do these things, I watch DVD's and play MP3's-however I own all my cd's so if I need to re-incode them please tell me how to do so. I appreciate all your help, and email me with any information (Jecenlightened@aol.com) without the ().
Since I am new to Linux, I would be open to using an easier edition if that would make my problems go away, please suggest if I used the wrong Linux or something, workers told me this was easiest to use, but failed to mention it wouldn't play store dvd's or rentals, I hate to repartition and reinstall windows, I am tired of the large paperweight running so slow, and linux did seem to fix alleviate that issue.

It will play DVD's, MP3's, and everything else easily. A quick search would show you how. The latest version of openSUSE is 11.2. 11.0 is a bit dated now, so upgrading would be best.
And if you go to the openSUSE.org website, and searched for this, you'll find one-click install packages for codecs, players, etc. Search for libdvdcss, and you'll see references to it, which is what you need for playing DVD's.
Clicking one mouse button seems fairly easy to get this going....
