DVD Shrink alternative for linux
 

Hellow,

I'm looking for a linux alternative of DVD Shrink
dvdshrink.org/what.html

It is an application that compresses a Dual Layer 8Gb Video DVD to a Single Layer 4.7Gb Video DVD. It let's you choose what chapters you want to compress and how much you want to compress it. It rips and compresses the .vob, .bub and .ifo files to your HD and then you need to burn the to a DVDR with your burning software.

Maybe some of you know this application and can give me a linux alternative or you could find an application that is simular to my explenation.

Wine will let you use the windows DVD shrink and DVD Decrypter
but.....xDVDshrink is out there too.

Try searching this site for something like that.

To give you a little nudge on the parameters to input to ctkroeker's recommended site, you could look into

dvd::rip
lxdvdrip
acidrip

(for starters)

Edit: The tool I've used to do the actual 'shrinking' is tcrequant - but there are probably others.

Thanks for the XDVDshrink tip, that's one i have never heard of. I installed it and tried it today, and it works great. Not a lot of command line knowledge is needed. While i'm not a stranger to the command line, a lot of the video conversion tools (transcode, mencoder) require a million command switches to perform simple tasks, and it can be a bit of a burden to figure out what combination of switches you need to get the job done. XDVDshrink sports a simple command line tool, as well as a GUI to help with picking the "right options". It gets my vote.

dvd::rip is the gui front end to transcode. both together are quite good, imho.

I got DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink to work with wine!
With the help of this page and wine 20050524.
Tutorial
I'm using "Fedora Core 2".

I didn't have to Changing to "Windows"="nt40" in my wine config prevented shrink from installing.
I didn't overwrite any dll's from dll.zip in my "~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/System/". I left the existing dll's in tact.
Make sure you have a dvd mounted durring the process or your programs will say no device found.
Both DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink are working fine for me.
