DVD +RW software recomendations

I am helping a friend set up a Via C3 CPU/PLE133 based system to be a CD/DVD burning station. He purchased a kyphermedia DVD +RW burner.

From what I understand we will need to use KDE/K3b inorder to burn + dvd's via a gui.
Does one distro tend to support this function better than others? Is there any advantage going with the 2.6.x kernel? We are presently using the 2.4 kernel w/ scsi for cd burning and find it to be pretty reliable.

Any feedback appreciated.
