DVD Player, and DVD/MP3 ripping
Could anyone reccomend a good dvd player for mandrake 9.1?
I am also looking for a program that can rip dvds to divx, and another to rip mp3s from cd. I am slowly trying to phase windows from my machine, so the sooner I can do these things the better :D AHMA |

Try ogle
I use ogle for playing dvd's
I have put all the rpm's for Mandrake 9.1 on my site <<here>> Enjoy. You can also use mplayer or xine - both work well with mandrake 9.1. As with all things linux, it is down to personal choice, try them all, see which one you like. Chris. |
Hello,
I installed your rpm package. The player comes up. When I try to play it errors out complaining about audio device. I have alsa installed and it works fine with xmms and even xine. I have attached the console output below. Any suggestions please. Thanks, Senthil [root@Einstein ogle]# ogle -u gui libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.6 for DVD access libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.6 for DVD access libdvdread: Attempting to retrieve all CSS keys libdvdread: This can take a _long_ time, please be patient libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB at 0x00000120 libdvdread: Elapsed time 2 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_0.VOB at 0x000006c7 libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB at 0x0000568d libdvdread: Elapsed time 0 libdvdread: Found 1 VTS's libdvdread: Elapsed time 2 WARNING[ogle_mpeg_vs]: B-frame before forward ref frame WARNING[ogle_mpeg_vs]: B-frame before forward ref frame No accelerated IMDCT transform found ERROR[ogle_audio]: Opening alsa pcm device 'default': No such file or directory FATAL[ogle_audio]: failed opening the alsa audio driver at default No accelerated colorspace coversion found [root@Einstein ogle]# |
looks like you've not set any details in the sound preferences. personally i'd still suggest a decent player like mplayer....

You do need to install all 5 packages (in the correct order).
ogle-0.9.1-ogle1alsa.i586.rpm deals with alsa sound. If this does not work, try the ogle website << here >>, they may have more ideas. OR use mplayer or xine (both really good dvd players). |
WHy don't you try installing mplayer via CVS. Here is a link on how to do that: http://tuxpower.f2g.net/mencoder.php I tried mplayer rpm packages before and I couldn't get mencoder working. Make sure you have lame installed also so you can do 3-pass dvd encoding.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies. I actually tried xine and mplayer before trying ogle. I have used xine before on RH 8 and everything was fine. Now I have changed to Mandrake 9.1 and xine is not smooth. Not sure what setting is wrong. Then tried mplayer. With this, the player gui closes after playing the first 2 secs or so of the DVD. I tried other options listed in the output but nothing worked. The mplayer console error output is as follows (hence tried ogle)- [root@Einstein root]# mplayer -vo x11 /dev/dvd Using GNU internationalization Original domain: messages Original dirname: /usr/share/locale Current domain: mplayer Current dirname: /usr/share/locale MPlayer 0.90-RPM-3.1 (C) 2000-2003 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS) CPU: Intel (Family: 8, Stepping: 4) Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1 Compiled with Runtime CPU Detection - WARNING - this is not optimal! Oops sorry, I guess I am posting my problems on a different thread. Moderator, if possible can you please move the relevant postings of my problem to a new thread with say "dvd player issues" as heading?
Thanks, Senthil |
