dvd drive won't boot
Hello People,
Ist post on this forum so here goes, and thanks in advance.
I have win xp pro on my hdd and am trying to, with not much success to dual boot with Fedora 8. I had set the dvd drive to 1st option in the bios and though I was good to go. But to no avail, I changed the dvd jumper to Master also to no avail, tried the cable connections, they seem to be in well.
I read some-where if you press f12 more than one time it stops you from booting of your dvd drive. I don't know how true this is, anyway I'm pretty stuck now I have been googling to find an answer but, my head is starting to spin advice needed please.
Thanks

Can you use the disk to boot another machine? How did you burn the image? Did you verify the MD5 checksum before burning?

I didn't burn the disc I used a sample dvd from a magazine, also tried a couple of other copies from different magazines got the same result. I'm very new to all this so forgive my ignorance. I even tried to load win xp media just see if it was the linux dvd's still got no joy.

Once your system has started, can you read the contents of the dvd? Perhaps you need to use a laser lens cleaner, or the drive might be toast.

I have used the dvd drive to look at my back-up stuff so the drive works, do you think i should try another dvd drive? Would this make the system detect a new drive and then re-set the lack of comunications with the dvd drive?
Thanks for the input people.

Yes, if you have a spare drive lying around it wouldn't hurt to try it. You might also consider taking another peek into BIOS to make sure your changes were saved when you set the dvd as first boot device. I've actually had that happen to me before.

Ok, I tried the other dvd drive to no avail. I also tried disconnecting my hdd to see if it would boot from dvd drive still no joy. When I re-checked the bios, it showed "Not Present" along side the dvd drive! Even though I can use the drive. So I'm at a loss now as to what to try.

"Not Present"? And that can't be changed? Is that in your boot options?
How old is your PC? Have you booted from DVD before? Have you ever flashed BIOS?

Hi,
Pc is 4yrs old. It had originaly xp media installed on it with-out an operating disc. Here comes the fun bit. I had a power cut and since that time it wouldn't boot off a cd/dvd.
So I had this tech guy come around and he said he would have to take it home to to do a full re-install and save any docs/photos etc. So he did this and had mentioned flashing the bios but not sure if he did or not. Anyway he couldn't load ( sounds a little dodgy) xp media so he installed win xp pro. with a student's version?! I thought this was a better op system so wasn't too bothered.
Re; Not present, I can't change the not present settings, is this me or am I missing something??
Thanks in advance.

That's a very good possibility. I've been considering that one myself, especially after you mentioned the power outage. The link in my signature (Flashing BIOS) is a good start. While it's not all that difficult, it's not that hard to screw up, either. Read everything very carefully, take notes, make backups, etc., etc., BEFORE you attempt it yourself. If after reading the material you don't feel comfortable with trying that, you might find a more tech-savvy friend to do it for you, or maybe shop around for a replacement BIOS chip and do a swap, instead.
