DVD drive only recognized as CDROM

I have a toshiba DVD burner that is only being recognized as a CDROM drive. If I put a cdrom in it mounts automatically. But when I place a DVD in and try to mount it, it just says it is an unrecognized format.

You can't mount DVD's, you have to use a program like mplayer or xine to play it.

I have tried to use mplayer to mount the data DVD and video DVD but I can't get it to recognize that there is even a DVD drive instead of just a cdrom there

sorry, I posted it in here before I realized that I should have put it in hardware. I will be more careful about it next time
