DVD does not play. . .

I have tried on 14.07 and now 16.04 Ubuntu.

I cannot play DVD's on my laptop.
The directory of the DVD shows up, but that is it.

could someone help me in the right direction?

Is this a movie DVD or a data DVD? What program(s) were you using?

I find that VLC plays video DVD's just fine in my Mint machine.

None of my Movie DVD's play at all.

Regular data DVD's and CD's are fine for RW.

Ok...so did you read/follow the links that Ztcoracat gave you?

You're not providing much in the way of useful details which would let us help you. Is this a new installation of ubuntu? Existing? Did this ever work? What player are you using? Aside from "can't play" DVD's, are you getting ANY error(s)/message(s)? Is ANY of the DVD (like an intro?) playing? Chances are you're missing the DVD codecs or dvdcss...which the links Ztcoracat provided will show you how to install.

Try opening your player (whatever it is--you still haven't mentioned what player you are using) from the command line and then playing a DVD. Perhaps some useful messages appear in the terminal.

If they do, post them here, being sure to enclose it in "code" tags, which become available when to click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the compose post windows.

Thank you very much., . .all of you.

I tried it at work, and couldn't get it to work. But I went home, and was able to get some of them to load up
properly.

I had to follow Ztcoracat links. . .I am thinking that one of the DVD's may not be playable.

The DVD/CD is called "Chicken run"

But all of my wifes DVD's of I love lucy now plays like they are supposed to.

Yep...because, as said, you don't have the dvdcss decoder installed. This is a very typical region encoding problem, and such very old shows like your wifes DVD's aren't encoded that way. Chicken Run is a recent movie.

Follow what Ztcoracat told you, and install the dvdcss software.

Don't forget to mark your thread SOLVED.

Did you not read the very obvious links in this very thread??? Also, read the "Question Guidelines" and LQ rules...don't hijack someone elses thread with your own question. And, when asking a question, you need to provide details. Version/distro of Linux that you're using? What you have done/tried on your own? ANY efforts at doing basic research??
