DVD burning problems

ArchLinux
kdemod-legacy (based on kde v. 3.5.10)
kdemod version of k3b
Brasero
Plextor 712A DVD burner

Using both k3b and Brasero, I cannot burn a DVD. It consistently stops at around 100MBytes and just sits there. When I cancel, k3b hangs and has to be forcibly killed. With either k3b or Brasero, I cannot unmount or eject the DVD---I must reboot.

I have tried burning at slower speeds with the same result. The same drive will burn a CD with no problems---it will also read a DVD.

I have cleaned the laser.

On this setup, all 3 of my optical drives will not automount when I select the "open in new window" option in the KDE new media dialog. I have no trouble mounting manually and all 3 drives read CDs/DVDs with no problem.

Anyone have any clues?

You can try running k3b from a terminal and see what errors you see. After you try burning a cd again you could also post output from
Quote:
dmesg | tail > dmesg.txt
, this will create a text file in your home directory.

It could be that that drive is not properly supported. Or that it's just trying to use the wrong driver. The drive on my eMachine does pretty much what you've described. It'll start to burn a DVD and then hangs. I actually have to reboot that machine to get the drive to respond again. While my compaq (newer desktop) burns DVDs like a dream. You might try manually overriding the driver that cdrecord/growisofs/wodim/ whatever is using to do the burn. Which might mean not using k3b, but rather doing things the long way. If using a RW type media, you might have to do a -blank type format first.

$ cdrecord -help

$ cdrecord driver=help

Thanks for the inputs.....

I have now tried both k3b and Brasero--the latter on two different distros---basically the same answer. Based on some Googling, it seems possible that there is some firmware update needed--or a different driver.

Next move is to try with DVD +R instead of -R, and also try my Plextor 716 at work.

Welllllll......

I tried at work with DVD+R and a Plextor 716--No problems

Now I have just successfully burned a DVD using +R media on the 712. Previous Googling hints that -R media could be an issue for this drive. While I am curious, I am somehow less than thrilled by the prospect of researching this further.

I want my Apple-II back.....
