Dvd's do not play in VLC, xine, mplayer, or movie play (Karmic)

Hi all,

first post, so please excuse my noobishness:

here goes: I'm running 9.10 on a lenovo g450 laptop. I have most of what I think the necessary software is: vlc, xine, mplayer, movie player. I have most if not all of the gstreamer plugins, I've installed libdvdcss2 and the ubuntu-restricted plugins. What happens is that none of these programs will play my dvd (british series 'coupling') for more than a few seconds without stopping. Basically, whatever program I use goes to the dvd menu, will begin to play in poor, pixelated quality with choppy sound, and then crashes. For a little while, vlc would play it with the same pixelation and poor sound, but now no dice anyway you slice the cake. Any suggestions?

Hi Craig,

thank you for your RTFM reply. However, I'd already stumbled across that tutorial and I've gone through it. I have DMA enabled on the drive, and I can play the videos just at really poor quality. So...could this be a hardware issue?
