DV video transfer w/USB-to-Firewire cable
Hi folks,

I have an old Sony DV camcorder with a IEEE 1394 Firewire port. All my machines that had 1394 ports have died, so I purchased a USB to Firewire cable with the correct connectors. Anyone have any clues on what drivers I need to load in order to get everything recognized? The particular cable is an Insten. My original intent was to use in on my Windoze laptop, but M$ has decided that Firewire devices can't possibly still exist.

I've loaded firewire_ohci but the USB still fails on enumerating the device. Any ideas other than purchasing a Firewire card?

Did you purchase something like what is pictured below? If the output of the lsusb command does not recognize the cable then I don't think it has a chipset and is not going to work as expected. You probably need to purchase a card.

That's what I figured. I did further research after posting this thread. The consensus is that these cables wouldn't work even if the correct drivers could be loaded bacause of the packet vs. stream methods of data transfer, USB being packets of data with a sort of ACK/NAK while the 1394 bus is just a continuous stream of data from each device. I ordered a PCIE 1394 card yesterday. That is sure to work.
