Dual OS Installation Problem with Linux(Win XP and Linux)

I Had Windows Xp Professional Edition in My system..
Then Try to install the Linux OS in seperate Drive..
But When i do the installation "Its does not detect the Hard drive and other drives except the USB Drive and Network drive"....

My System Configuration:
512 MB Ram, Segate 160GB Hard Disk..

Please Help me to rectify the problem.....

1. is the seperate drive seen in the bios?
2. which distri do you try to install
3. which controller is used for the hdd's IDE or SATA or SCSI ?

go to the bio set up, make the system to boot from the hard drive first. then restart the system. if the system detect the hard rive, then try to install it again.

or boot the system with your formal windows xp, go to the disc management and see if the hard drive is detected, or is listed.
