Dual Head problems

OK.. i run slackware -current and had everything running nicly until Slackware came out with kde 3.1 tgz packages.. until then i was using 3.0.5 and then generic 3.1 packages. I have a G4 Ti 4200 and use dual CRT monitors. I use Xinerama so i don't get the window spanning problem. Well here's what i did.. i deleted my /usr/lib/qt* dir and my /opt/kde dir and installed the new slackware approved kde 3.1 packages (idiot) i should have just upgraded package or removepkg them instead... anyway.. now no matter what i do.. i can't get Xinerama to do it's thing... here are the config and log files from my system...
please tell me i'm missing something small :)
I have tried to put Option "Xinerama" "on" / "true" / "1" in other places but i might have missed something.. thanks.

here is something i find odd:

(II) Loading extension XINERAMA
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Option "Xinerama" is not used

# NOTE: This is a NEW IMPROVED version of XF86Config-fbdev that uses the vesa
# driver instead of the fbdev driver. Thanks to Kenneth Fanyo who pointed
# this out to me. :)

# This XF86Config file is designed for use with the VESA framebuffer.
# This generic interface should work with nearly all video cards
# (although not every card will support every resolution).

# With the new driver, it should no longer be required to have frame buffer
# support in the kernel, or to run it on the console.
#
# Enjoy! :)

pretty small as far as i can tell:

Xinerama is an option for the serverlayout, not the screen

Freaksta 03-09-2003 10:14 AM

seems it's still not working:

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present
Identifier "Simple Layout"
Option "Xinerama" "on"
# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally
# the relative position of other screens. The four names after
# primary screen name are the screens to the top, bottom, left and right
# of the primary screen. In this example, screen 2 is located to the
# right of screen 1.

Screen "Screen 1"

# Each InputDevice line specifies an InputDevice section name and
# optionally some options to specify the way the device is to be
# used. Those options include "CorePointer", "CoreKeyboard" and
# "SendCoreEvents".

InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"

EndSection

acid_kewpie 03-09-2003 10:18 AM

well of course it won't you've only got one screen listed there! how can it spread a display across two monitors if you only tell it that there is one?! i'd suggest looking at the docs as http://xfree86.org

Freaksta 03-09-2003 10:20 AM

Log file has changed, but i still get the splash screen in the middle of both monitors, i still get the taskbar all the way across the screen and i still get mozilla popping up in both monitors :(

well of course it won't you've only got one screen listed there! how can it spread a display across two monitors if you only tell it that there is one?! i'd suggest looking at the docs as http://xfree86.org

My understanding is that TwinView takes care of that...

Am i incorrect?

acid_kewpie 03-09-2003 12:22 PM

yep. you still need to have a screen defined for each monitor you want, and a server layout that arranges them accordingly

Freaksta 03-09-2003 01:04 PM

Ok i'll read the documentation on that site, but i am very confused :(

i was positive that nVidia handled the second monitor.. that's why we put secondhorizontalrefresh and stuff like that ..

i'll read somemore :)

Freaksta 03-09-2003 01:17 PM

OK i added the monitor section and now i have two monitor settings.. but i still get applications that span across both monitors when maximized.. the KDE splash screen still pops up in the middle.. and i can't get KDE to identify Xinerama screens in the control panel..

here is my XF86Config:

# NOTE: This is a NEW IMPROVED version of XF86Config-fbdev that uses the vesa
# driver instead of the fbdev driver. Thanks to Kenneth Fanyo who pointed
# this out to me. :)

# This XF86Config file is designed for use with the VESA framebuffer.
# This generic interface should work with nearly all video cards
# (although not every card will support every resolution).

# With the new driver, it should no longer be required to have frame buffer
# support in the kernel, or to run it on the console.
#
# Enjoy! :)
