Dual Boot Went Wrong, How Do I Access Old Files?
 

Hi, I had partition troubles on my MInt 5 install on my desktop. I did not know how to do a manual check, so I tried installing MInt 7 beside it, hoping to either access files through it, or change the partition. On install it found a partition error, so I went through and edited things, somehow this lost MInt 5, even though I left several gigabytes free. I am hoping the old MInt 5 files are there.

Even though I chose to dual boot, there is only Mint 7.

Is there a way to access Mint 5 on my DEll Pentium 4, or at least the files?

Please provide more information. What did you do partition wise when you installed Mint 7?

Did you have your old /home on it's own partition or was is a subdirectory of your old root (/) partition? Does this partition still exist?

Look at "sudo /sbin/fdisk -l" to print out information on how your drive is partitioned.
Did you do this previously and backup or print out the results?

When you say only Mint 7 is present, are you referring to the grub boot menu?
If you can run Mint 7, and you have your old /home partition present, can you mount it?

Are there indications that the hard drive itself is starting to have problems?
