Question dtc (device tree compile ) call fails with syntax error

Calling dtc with these options:

dtc -f -b 0 -I dts -O dtb -R 8 -S 0x3000 dtbFile dtsFile
fails with
Error dtsFile 12:0 - 1:0 syntax error

Where line 12 is just the opening brace at the start of the code in the dts file. I've tried removing everything from the dts file but the braces but will then get the syntax error on whatever line number the opening brace is on.
