Drivers for old PC -Wifi not getting detected

Hi ,

Is there any way to detect the wifi adapter in Linux.
Am using Zenith SmartPC (which does not have cabinet)
the realtek wifi controller is not getting detected by OS, but when use commands like lspci , it is listed but not detected to use the existing wifi connections . Drivers are available for realtek for kernel 2.6 , am using LinuxMint 17.3 as OS. will a older kernel will work or we have to move to older Operating system

Any help is appreciated
if a solution is found, 18+ systems can be benefited and no need to go for wiring LAN and switching

Thanks!

what realtek is it, exactly?

In other words, what's the output of

Code:

lspci | grep -i net
