Downloading FTA "fixes" on Ubuntu

Hi Gang
I am currently running Ubuntu and I also have a ViewSat Platinum 2000 receiver that I use for my TV source. The problem I am seeking advice on is the fact that I cannot convert the file I need to keep it running.
I download the file in a zip format but from there I cannot get wine or any other program to unzip it so I can load it to a flash drive which I use yo update my receiver. My Computer does not have any integrated com ports and does not seem to recognize my USB to com port cable, but when I run mini com it does. wine works fine on all other types of files.
Is it because wine does not recognize the requirement of a com port to operate properly?

ANY help or Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm confused - what does a USB to serial converter have to do with unzipping a file?

To unzip:
unzip blah
If unzip complains, post what you typed and what unzip complained about.
