Downloaded rar file, tried to open with 7Zip, getting "file is broken" message?

I am downloading a software on rapidshare but it is an rar file. I've only downloaded the first two parts out of five. I've downloaded 7zip to open it with but whenever I try, it is saying that file is broken.
1. Do I need to upload all the parts before it can open properly? or is that those two files are corrupt, and I need to upload it again?
or once I have all the parts downloaded, what do I do?
Thank you in advance for your help, I would really appreciate the help.

Yes, you need all five parts before extraction, because the data has been split between them. It may possible to extract individual files from the parts though, if the part contains the whole thing. The first part will give the total list of files in the combined archive.

When you have all five parts, simply run extract on the first part. As long as the rest of the files have the same filename+sequencenumber it should extract them all.

Thanks David. Two more parts to download before I try what you said. I hope it works, since its for a homework that's due, and I don't have enough time today to go to the school lab. Thanks again.

If you use unrar, you can use the -kb option (keep broken).

unrar -kb x filename.000.rar

Unhappy It's not working

I have all the parts and tried to open the first, I'm still getting the broken file message.

Do you get the error on the first rar file? If so, the you might want to redownload the first one. The others may be OK.

I agree with jschiwal, if you can't open one of the archive parts at all then it's possible that it's corrupt or incomplete. Can you view the contents of any of the parts?

Edit: I just thought of another possibility. rar is a proprietary format, and newer versions of it are not supported by the free versions of unrar. You may need to have the nonfree version of the rar plugin installed to be able to handle such files.

what are the file names
if this file1.rar.001 , file2.rar.002 ,file3.rar.003
then you will need to use " lxsplit " the nix version of hjsplit
-- or --
file1.001.rar , file2.002.rar ,file3.003.rar
then put them in the same folder and use rar to open the first one and the others will be auto added
Code:
rar e file1.001.rar
also why are you running the wine install of the MS 7-zip
file-roller supports the .7z format once the plugin is installed
or from the CLI
