Download the 3 iso images for mandrake. Now what?

Im getting the disc in the mail, but I would still like to try installing it from downloads. Once I downloaded the 3 iso files (from here: ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/Mandrake/iso/ What do I do next? How do I set it up to start installing? I have winxp home right now and placed another 60gb HD as a slave in which I will be placing mandrake on.

I appreciate the help

An "iso" is an image of a disk, so use that as the source when burning the contents to cdrom. I mean, use an option like "burn from image" and select the iso, not to burn the iso "as is", then you'll have a 1-file coaster. Cdrom 1 will be bootable. Select "boot from cdrom" in your BIOS, pop in the cd and off you go...

I think you could also extract the disks using some freeware tool, and use the contents and a bootdisk to start up the installer, but having the cd's can come in handy later.

The md5sum is a text file that contains a key. A program that is usable from a dos prompt will resolve the downloaded contents of your iso file. the keys should be identical if you got everything in the dl. It helps if you don't want to burn coasters. I however never use it. discs are cheap if I get a crap one I toss it.

www.linuxiso.org is a great resource for tutorials on burning/obtaining and loading iso images and the files they contain.

Good point. The "md5" file holds the checksums for the iso's so you can verify they downloaded OK before you burn them. The ".asc" holds the GPG/PGP signing of the package, so you can verify it has not been tampered with. You'll need md5sum and Gnu Privacy Guard or Pretty Good Privacy for MICROS~1.
