dovecot dead but pid file exists

My dovecot installation crashes after sometime, normally within one day. If I restart the process manually it works again for sometime but eventually it crashes again.

Code:
root# service dovecot status
dovecot dead but pid file exists
Code:
root# dovecot --version
1.2.14
Code:
root# dovecot -n
# 1.2.14: /etc/dovecot.conf
# OS: Linux 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE i686 Fedora release 12 (Constantine)
protocols: imap imaps
login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login
login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login
auth default:
  passdb:
    driver: pam
  userdb:
    driver: passwd
I've upgraded to the latest dovecot release but still no luck.
Any help?

It looks like an ntp problem:

Code:
Sep 30 05:10:54 vlocalhost dovecot: dovecot: Time just moved backwards by 1 seconds. I'll sleep now until we're back in p
resent. http://wiki.dovecot.org/TimeMovedBackwards
How do I change the frequency with which ntpd goes in Internet and update my systime under fedora 12?

Cheers

You can stop the ntpd and run ntpdate as a cron job.

According to this page http://wiki.dovecot.org/TimeMovedBackwards this is not a good idea:

To be said that I'm running linux on a ESXi VM. I've just enables "synchronize time with the host", let's see how it goes
