Automatically mounting removable devices is now handled by the file manager or desktop environment itself in modern Linux systems. While originally you would have had to use something like autofs, that has been made obsolete with new technologies like HAL and UDEV.
Basically, when a new mountable device is detected by the kernel, a signal is sent out to any listening process that says "A new device has been plugged in, and here is it's info". If you want to make use of this signal, you need to use a file manager (like Dolphin) or desktop environment (KDE, GNOME) that is built with support for it. More simplistic desktop environments or file managers don't have support for it.
