Does the Ximian desktop noticably affect the system speed?

I just installed the Ximian desktop. In retrospect, I wish I had just installed Red Carpet as a stand-alone. I try to run some programs like OpenOffice and they seem quite a bit slower. Is this what I can expect from the rest of my system now with the Ximian desktop?

I once installed suse 9 and I found the gnome desktop to be less "fancy"
maybe you will get better performance from gnome on that distro. I did.
