Question Does CPIO compress?

I just got a tape drive from my brother and was looking at archiving software but why would I not use cpio? I looked around for CPIO "how to"s but can't find much more than the basic man page. Any helpful ideas?

No, it doesn't.

You can gzip or bzip the file afterwards. Or you can pipe cpio's output directly the *zip as it's being created.
