document management software

I'm aware of quite a few open-source document management systems out there, but what I'm wondering is if any of you have experience of setting up a system similar to the following -

1. Scan paper documents into system;
2. Perform OCR or similar to generate textual content for indexing;
3. Store information in content-management system for easy retrieval.

There are a lot of documents (close on 100,000 so far), so any solution has to be fast, and as fully-automated as possible - no manual editing of document information, for example. We have already invested in a high-throughput Lanier multi-function copier for the job.

I'm completely new to this so if any of you have some pointers, it would be much appreciated.

At the moment, my employer is using Windows 2k3 server and a Windows domain... However, we're in the process of adding lots of extra functionality, and the licensing costs are looking enormous - perhaps it's time for Linux to make an appearance?! Anyway, I'm looking at platform-neutral solutions - I can't (yet!) look at Linux-only applications, but since a lot of CMS software appears to be web-based I don't think it's a real concern.

We aren't Open Source, but I would suggest you look at It's web based, currently accesible either with our Windows client or through a web browser. We don't have a comercially available Linux client yet, but could if there was a request.

We have a completely free trial (no credit card or anything), so it might be worth while to try it out.3
