Do you know any app like GetDataBack for linux ?

On windows I always use a very good and simple program to recover deleted files, get data back, if im not wrong this app is from ontrack, on linux I know that there are many useful tools, like foremost, sleuthkit and other, but I need something that let me recover an entire folder and its contents not only file by file, and not like foremost that recover a lot of files numbered named ...

I made some search but I say about technics and nothing about useful programs.

Thanks!

There are several applications, with varying degrees of user-friendliness. TestDisk and PhotoRec work together to make file recovery possible. Bothe are available at http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk.

Point your browser at www.google.com/linux and do some research on how to use them for file recovery.

I use a handy little tool called "recover" mhich is made (I think specifically) to work with EXT2 filesystems.

You enter various specs (like date, size, filetype) of the deleted stuff you are looking for, and then leave it to do its thing. When I used it, it returned HUUUUUNDREDS of files, yet I only wanted to recover like 15 files. They were shell-scripts, and I had a good idea of their general size, so it wasn't too bad.

The recovered files are saved as deleted-INODE numbers, which you then must rename to something you like (or their original filenames) and I found that the Recover tool was a super-duper gadget when I needed it.

If you cannot locate it (or sourcecode for it) let us know (if you want it that is); I should have the source still here somewhere, I can send you it.

EDIT - Here's a snippet from the man page:
Code:

DESCRIPTION
recover  recovers  a  file  which  matches  some  ext2 - info about the deleted inode by getting all the
deleted inodes and filtering them. It's based upon the Ext2Undeletion-howto by Aaron Crane.  Using  this
utility, your chances to recover a lost file should increase a lot.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DELETED FILE
        o Hard disk device name
        o Year of deletion
        o Month of deletion
        o Weekday of deletion
o First/Last possible day of month

and the website:

SORRY - Broken Link. Website seems defunct.

Hmmm
thank you both for the reply

TestDisk I knew already, will try it to see if I cat get a best recovery.

I will take a look at recover too but im afraid that it only works with ext partitions...

thanks

GrapefruiTgirl,

That link is broken this am & the site's own search for "recover" gives no results.

The good news is the Dapper (I running SimplyMEPIS 6.0) repos have it in Universe
-- I would advise any folks looking for it to check their repos 1st.

@Archtoad,

thanks for that update.

As mentioned too, if anyone does want this 'recover' tool, I have the source here (v1.3 as I recall) as well as a slack-package.
I did initially find it with google :)
