do I need CUPS for network printing?
 

I don't currently have a printer attached to this computer; the only printer in the house is in another room and I'd have to use it over the network. Does network printing need CUPS, or can I delete it?

you should leave CUPS as that is the printer service you can use to tell it to go to a network printer easily.
