If you don't have another OS on your system I think it is a good idea to use linux software raid. But if you have another system on your computer it is not so obvious to have a raid for one system and another raid for another system.
The dmraid is nice when you try to use the fake-raid of a mainboard, but not many boards give you an advantage. There are controllers that with the correct drivers have a (partial) hardware support, but don't count on it.
Another advantage of mdadm can be that you can use the discs in another computer to recover them. the dmraid can work, but in case of problems I don't know how easy it is to create a new disc to you in a raid 1 or 5 with this system of your mainboard.
Best regards,
