sorry, I installed from the source. The RPM I tried to install said i needed the mplayer .90 before i could install it. So I grabed the source, configured, and did a make. But I installed it in the /downladed/MPlayer folder, so I wasnt sure if that affected anything as well.

And I just installed the X devel from the link you sent me, but still none of the vo options help. They won't even play the audio.
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

you recomplied it? you should use the rpm from your distro cd's before that one, i don't know if it's the same version, it says it's for redhat 8.0 but it might be slightly different

I had to download the source for mplayer, and I recompiled that. I downloaded the rpm for x devel and installed it.

yes but you need to recompile mplayer AFTER you install the X devel package
