Talking Divx and Xvid are S S S L L L O O O W W W !!!

I am trying to turn an imac into a computer for the kids. Things are going great but the codec the imac is using for DIVX and XVID are terribly slow! how do i know it is the codec? No matter how small or big i make the Totem Media player window (or Xine or VLC), the performance is the same. Can someone help me with configuring or choosing the right codecs?

I know this system can play these at full screen and smoothly. In VLC i can configure it to do so but for only a second or two, then video stops. I installed the Divx4linux and xvid codec. Here are my system specs.

-g3 233mhz 750ppc cpu
-256mb pc100 RAM
-13gb HDD (8gb free)
-600mb swap partition
-builtin rage iic 6mb graphics

Perhaps you should try a more minimalistic video player like MPlayer?
