Question distcc usage in a "chaotic" environment

Hi !
I wanna make use of distccd on many computers.
But those computers may be up or down because they are users workstations.
Is there a tool, or a way to quickly discover which PC are usable ?
I though about writing a script which ping, and identify booted hosts, then "export" distcc hosts automatically.
But maybe there's some useful tools around ?

I've never used it before, but have you looked at dmucs? It is listed on the distcc page as related software.
