Display artifacts in Ubuntu 7.10

I'm having a problem with display. When the picture on screen is moving horizontally (like while playing a Video, scrolling an image horizontally or while playing a game) some lines appear on screen. When the picture is moving vertically, there are no artifacts. This problem is there both with or without compiz-fusion enabled. I didn't have this problem in Ubuntu 7.04.

My graphics card is Nvidia 6800GS. I'm using the nvidia-glx-new (v100.14.19) driver from the Ubuntu repositories. I tried changing xorg.conf to have the same monitor frequency and modes as in Ubuntu 7.04 but the problem is still there.

Also, I had a similar problem earlier in Ubuntu 6.10 when I had installed xgl and beryl. After disabling xgl, the problem was gone. Not sure if something similar is happening here.
