Disk Management Utility "palimpset"

Does anybody know details about the integrated benchmark which comes with the disk management utility "palimpset"? How does it perform the read/write benchmark?

I guess it utilizes the SMART or whatever code (maybe the hard drive's control mechanism) to perform noninvasive testing...maybe look at the old Commodore disk drives (the REL files of them had TWO channels open to access...one for operations, the other for error status...the file)? I do not know if this helps, but...random illustration of random access? See if you can look up other utilities that function like this. It may very well be random access testing. Just a random guess; sorry if it doesn't help
