Usually they are in /usr/share/backgrounds or thereabouts. I'm not on SUSE so I could be wrong, but certainly on Slackware and stock KDE, they are stored in /usr/share/backgrounds by default.

According to the KDE Filesystem Hierarchy they should be in /usr/share/wallpapers, or ~/.kde/share/wallpapers at a user's level.

Are you sure? I have them in wallpapers as above.

Reason: fixed user-level path (thanks to BrianL)

If you've got any by clicking on "Get new wallpapers" in the desktop settings GUI, they end up in ~/.kde/share/wallpapers.

Sorry, my mistake.
I was looking in usr/share/backgrounds which is where Puppy Slacko keeps backgrounds.

Interesting, I do have that directory as well. But also a /usr/share/backgrounds. Since there's an 'xfce' directory there, maybe it's an XFCE thing..?

Yeah, I've got /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce, too. Must be where the default XFCE wallpapers go. And /usr/share/wallpapers (with loads of subdirectories) for all the default KDE wallpapers.

It seems that at least Xfce and MATE use "/usr/share/backgrounds" by default (not sure about Gnome):
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs...xfdesktop.html
http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/docs:gsettings
I also have a Slackware machine here with no desktop environments and no X server at all: there's an empty "/usr/share/wallpapers", which I guess is part of the "Slackware Filesystem Hierarchy" as well.
