DirectFB crashes on run

I have build a quite well working linux system loosely based on Linux From Scrach. I now got to the point where I want to get DirectFB to work. I tried both 1.0.1 and 1.1.1 but whenever I try to run it (for example with links -g or any dfb* program) the screen just goes black and I can olny escape with logging in with ssh and rebooting or using magic sysrq. What might be wrong with DirectFB, what to try here?
