Question Direct rendering disabled all of a sudden.

I enabled my TV as a second monitor through the S-video connection and for some reason it disabled my direct rendering, it worked fine before and I've tried everything I could find online to make it work again, but nothing seems to work.

I've modified the xorg.conf file in multiple different ways some websites suggested, I've reinstalled the ATI graphics drivers and Mesa, (and yes I did configure Mesa with direct rendering when I reinstalled.) I also tried removing the TV and also I tried all combinations of them all but it still shows direct rendering as off.

I hope someone could tell me how to really enable direct rendering. I have Slackware Linux 12.0, kernel 2.6.21.5, Mesa 7.0.2, ATI Mobility Radeon X600 and newest drivers from ATI.

If you removed the TV and reverted your xorg.conf file to its original state but direct rendering is still not working, I'd check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors. Do you have a backed up copy of xorg.conf to compare with your current version?

in /var/log/Xorg.0.log I found these lines
(EE) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized.
(II) fglrx(0): Direct rendering disabled
I replaced my current xorg.conf with the old one with no effect.

I think I found the real problem.

Code:
bash-3.1# modprobe fglrx
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.21.5-smp/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Invalid module format
Any suggestions on that one?

Do you have too much invested in it to reinstall?

I was thinking of that as well, but since I've been doing fine with this for more than 6 months so there's been a lot of stuff done and I really wouldn't want to do all that all over again.

I leave reinstall as the last possible option if I can't fix this in any other way.

Did you try recompiling the fglrx module with your current kernel ?
if you update your kernel you must recompile the graphics driver module..

A kernel update on my machine will break the graphics drivers every time... a quick recompile of the nvidia module using the headers that match my current kernel version fixes it and takes less than 30 secs to complete. Just a thought in case you have updated your kernel at some point..

Easy answer to that is I didn't update my kernel. :\ All I did was attach the TV to my S-video and used the ATI Catalyst Control Center to make the screen appear on the tv, after that it hasn't been working.

Reinstalling can be a pain, so I hope someone is smarter than I and can spot your problem and how to fix it. Me, I like to experiment too much, and I'm constantly running into weird problems, even breaking my distros altogether, and so I do a lot of reinstalling. I do have some advice on how to make it easier on yourself if you should have to reinstall despite your best efforts not to.

Some will say it's good to keep your /home/Ryuu in a separate partition so as to preserve your configurations and data. I find that my problem frequently is buried somewhere in my home directory, probably in a config file somewhere, and it's usually best to start over clean and reformatted.

But it IS good to save your DATA on a separate partition so you can reinstall and reformat without losing it. Then you can quickly make links from that parition's directories or even individual files to your new /home/Ryuu. I even save and use my browser bookmarks that way.

Good luck.

By golly, I'm beginning to think Linux really *is* the best thing since sliced bread.

I did end up reinstalling the whole thing and I did create a seperate partition for my home directory, thanks for the tips. I just finished the reinstall of linux and the ATI drivers and everything is working just fine again. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Glad it worked. Keep in mind that sometimes the cause of a blown installation can be somewhere in the /home/user directory, and that by keeping it you MIGHT retain the cause of the trouble. It's more convenient to keep all those config files, but in some cases anyway it's safer to clean it out and start fresh. However, I've never myself found keeping my DATA files to be a problem.
