Direct Graphics Access Corrupted Display

I run Ubuntu Dapper, and have Xorg 7, running on a laptop with a ProSavage integrated 3D chip (it's faster than the 815, so don't laugh).

My problem is when I export SDL_VIDEODRIVER="dga", I get a corrupted display whenever I run any SDL programs. Things that rely on this are Torus Trooper and ZSNES. I have this nagging feeling that DGA will be faster than using the default SDL_VIDEODRIVER="x11" option.

When I run dga (the test program for DGA) I get lots of shades of grey, instead of colours. Maybe it's actually changing the brightness of my LCD display, I don't know.
Anybody know why it would behave badly like this?
