difficulty installing FreeCad on linux mint "Rebecca" 17.1

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago on the sticky " what programs would you like to see ported to linux?"
I don't intend to duplicate questions and got some excellent responses on the previous thread.
However I am still unable to load this program to linux and have not heard from anyone who has done so successfully.
I am beginning to think that there is something wrong with the "Rebecca" release. Either that or I have suffered a pre-frontal lobotomy and should no longer be allowed a key board in front of me.
So the question is, has anyone been able to install FreeCad on the Linux Mint "Rebecca" release? If so how does it run? I have it on a Win Vista OS but it has a lot of malfunctions and was hoping it would run better under linux.
The hardware I am using should be more than adequate. It is an older Dell Inspirion with a AMD dual core 64bit processor 3gig of ram and a Fire GL graphics card. I have run SolidWorks on this machine when I had a seat but can no longer afford the 5K Dassault wants to use their software. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Hi...

I'm guessing the easy way isn't working.

Not sure I can help you with your issue but what kind of error messages are you receiving?

Regards...

With LMDE I found it's even easier than that link, simply "apt-get install freecad".
As ardvark71 asks, what happens when you try to install it? Also, come to that, how are you trying to install it?

Does an update and upgrade work OK. Can you install other things? What does the following return?
Code:
apt-cache search freecad

apt-cache search freecad in terminal results in just another line with my name and machine id apearing. This is the first program I have tried to install on this os. I have another box similar to this one without the graphics card that has linux mint maya os and have loaded other programs successfully. I see release 17.2 has been issued. Is Mint going the was of Microsoft? Is there something wrong with "Rebbecca?

It is possible that FreeCad isn't in the repositories of Mint Rebecca but it would help if you could confirm that you can install software. Have you updated your system yet?
I wouldn't worry about 17.2 being released -- if you keep your system up to date, as you should, then you'll probably be on 17.2 anyway.
