difference between ogg and mp3???
 

i still don't get it... i really can't figure out the difference between ogg and mp3 (besides their theoretical difference of course)

you probably have less-than-2000$-soundsystem...
can you tell a difference between, let's say, 128 and 190 bps mp3? it's more or less the same thing...

so you mean to say, there is no difference at all?

of course there's a difference, but if you're not audio-phreak, you shouldn't care too much(anyway, if were ARE audiaphreak, you wouldn't be messing around with compressed formats). i have everything in mp3's ('cause of portable mp3-cd player) and i have no intention to move to ogg...

MP3's do rule. Although I love WMA's for Winblows for the nice file size. That and RH refuses to play my MP3's for some unknown reason :)

wma's have 10kb more or less than mp3 - it's practically the same thing...i've got mdk9.1 and it "plays" mp3 normally (i think). it's "plays" because i'm still messing around with my sound card drivers, can't here a beep coming out my comp...do you happen to know how to create a sound device file - should be something with /dev/MAKEDEV but i have no idea what

There is one fundamental difference between mp3 and ogg. ogg is a completely open standard.

Remember that post-install install you had to od in RH9 to get mp3's to play (I guess deathspawner won't remember this) - well, that's due to the codec of mp3 not being open. RH is nervous about distributing these codecs, so it doesn't. Who do you think is making them nervous?

it's not really possible to convert ~20 GB of mp3s to ogg, and i don't have ogg-portable cd player...pity though...

changeing mp3 s to wont make you any good you wont have a better file at the the end anyway ogg folks claim that ogg is better than mp3 but converting mp3 to ogg is useless. and some one already mentioned you if you dont have good sound system you can not feel the diffrence anyway

I have to mention that mp3/AC3 format is not free, so RH disabled mp3 but suggest the use of OGG instead (What I mean is backup music from CD to PC).

Xmms in RH9 will do mp3's if you give it the right plugin

does any one know of a brand of stand alone cd player or car stereo that would play ogg files?

As many have said, mp3 format is not free. I am trying to make some small games for Linux (remakes) for years (still could not finish one), and mp3 should be great to use in a game, but as far as I know, if you distribute your game with mp3 format to the effects/music you have to pay a lot of fees to the ones who has the copyright of this format. It's amazing how simple things (formats as jpg, mp3) can be copyrighted. So, if you have a lot of mp3's and keep downloading / making mp3's, don't ever bother... however, think twice before release anything. Fonts, images formats, audio formats, video formats, source codes, libraries... there're so much to worry about that sometimes I really wonder if you can make something and release it without later a lawyer knock at your door with a huge bill...

jpeg, and mp3 are not simple. They where difficult to create. I beleive the jpeg patent ran out earlier this year, but I've never heard of it beeing enforced.

It takes a lot of effort to make a reliable, and good, file encoding. Look at the effort that went into making ogg, and that's going into making the video-cousin of ogg. (who's name I can't really recall)
